History

Pinehurts was first established as a privately held resort under James Walker Tufts, who purchased hundreds of acres of land in the Sandhills in 1895. After years of running solely as a resort, Pinehurst, Inc. took control of the area. It was not until 1980 that the resort facilities grew and the Village of Pinehurst was established as an incorporated municipality.
