Lake Gaston

Lake Gaston

Welcome home.

Lake Gaston is not a city or township, but rather a "community" of the privately owned property surrounding the Lake. Because of our recreational and relaxed pace, the population of lake residents is drawn primarily from a very large and diverse mix of vacation homeowners and retirees.

Lake Gaston is well stocked with game fish which include striped bass or rock fish, large mouth bass, crappie, sunfish and several varieties of catfish. Other species of fish sometimes caught are walleye, yellow perch and chain pickerel. A valid license for either Virginia or North Carolina permits fishing from a boat in either state. No license is required for those under 15. Not only isLake Gaston a fisherman’s delight, but the wildlife that inhabits the lake is a real treat for any nature lover. Lake Gaston is an attraction for Bald Eagles in the winter months, also Osprey in summer, numerous Sea Gulls, Great Blue Herons, waterfowl, and the careful observation may occasionally spry a River Otter playing on the rocks when the water level is low.

Lake Gaston is privately owned by Dominion Resources and was created to generate hydroelectric power. The waters are monitored by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Wildlife Commissions of both North Carolina and Virginia. Normal height of the water is 200 feet above sea level and by regulation the water depth may vary only one foot plus or minus, from the normal level except in case of emergency. And with virtually no pollution, the water is almost drinkable without treatment.

This beautiful lake offers ideal facilities for fishing, hunting, camping, boating and an array of water sports. There isn’t a boating horsepower restriction on the lake. A number of public launching ramps are available. Neighborhood marinas provide complete marine services. Developed land around the lake is in subdivisions, which are represented by property owner associations. Facilities and use of lake access in these subdivisions are restricted to the property owners and their guests.

For the young and old, Lake Gaston offers a variety of social events to keep even the most energetic person busy. A few of the bigger events on Lake Gaston include 4th of July fireworks at Eaton Ferry Bridge, the Chamber of Commerce’s Battle of the Barbeque after Memorial weekend, the Lion’s Club Seafood Festival in October, Lake Gaston Resort’s Hot Air Balloon Classic held in May, and the Lakeland Arts Center in Littleton offers a variety of classes in dance, music, drama, and art. The Arts Center also produces a number of their own diner theatre productions and hosts professional touring groups and concerts. Dance and Musical Theatre Camp is offered for young people in the summer.

Other activities that go on throughout the year include arts & crafts shows, town parades, poker runs, church functions, music concerts, numerous golf courses, and surrounding town celebrations.
