Durham is named in 1849 for Bartlett S. Durham, who donated land for the railroad depot to be established. The town grew and expanded, especially in the tobacco and textiles industries. In 1924, James Buchanan Duke donated $40 million dollars for Trinity College to become Duke University.
Bullock's BBQ is Durham's oldest continuously operated restaurant. They have been in business over 62 years. George Laurer developed the UPC (Universal Product Code) in the Durham's Research Triangle Park in 1973.
