The City of Henderson offers its residents small-town living, rich in history, yet located only about 40 minutes north of Raleigh. Near the Virginia border and Kerr Lake, this Vance County town offers many sights to enjoy, things to do and places to relax.

History buffs will enjoy strolling through town, as there are numerous buildings and houses that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Henderson Central Business Historic District is nationally recognized and includes over 90 buildings alone. A variety of additional structures are within this district and listed separately.

Kerr Lake, a massive lake with over 850 miles of shoreline, is perfect for outdoor activities on the water - skiing, boating, fishing. Check out our Kerr Lake Community Page for more information. On land, residents and visitors enjoy nature trails, camping, bird watching and more. The lake is a vital part of tourism in Vance County. Henderson also boasts 15 recreational sites, including ball fields, tennis and basketball courts and playgrounds.

Really step back in time at the Raleigh Road Outdoor Theatre, a true drive-in movie with a concession stand, and catch a movie while enjoying a burger and popcorn. It is one of only six drive-ins remaining in North Carolina.

For those with food on the mind, Two Twenty Seafood Restaurant offers a menu of seafood and American cuisine. If your appetite can’t decide between Italian or American food, then George’s is the spot for you with their pizza and pastas, burgers, gyros, steaks and ribs.

What’s not to love about Henderson with its history, great outdoor lake activity and close proximity to the state’s capital and the Virginia border. You may just come for a visit and decide to stay.

HISTORY

Settlers first moved to the area in 1784. As the railroad and economy boosted, the once desolate  area began to grow. Many businesses came to town in the 1830s. Henderson was a prominent tobacco-growing area and, along with cotton and textile mills, the growth spurred.
