Located just 6 miles south of the Virginia border, Mount Airy is a charming North Carolina town with history and entertainment. Although most commonly known for its inspiration of the hit “Andy Griffith Show,” there is much to do in Mount Airy outside of Mayberry. When entering Mount Airy, you cannot miss the inspiration of The Andy Griffith Show. Actor Andy Griffith grew up in Mount Airy, and the town has made its mark in celebrating that. Fans of the show can visit many sites that contribute to Mayberry, including Floyd’s City Barber Shop, Old Mayberry Jail, Snappy Lunch, Andy’s childhood home, and the Andy Griffith Museum. 

History
The city was officially established in 1977 and was superior in many industries including furniture, textiles, and granite. It is most famous for its large scale production of the granite quarry, which began in 1889. In 1994, Mount Airy won the All America City Award. 

Fun Fact
Mount Airy was the first city in the nation to win the STAR award for its superb safety program.
