History

Fayetteville’s original settlement was in 1739 by Scottish immigrants via the Cape Fear River. In 1762, the town of Campbellton united with the town of Cross Creek, which was later renamed to Fayetteville in 1783, honoring the Marquis de Lafayette, who served as Major General in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. In 1789, the legislature ratified the U.S. Constitution and chartered the University of North Carolina at a meeting located in Fayetteville. Due to its location as an inland hub of the “plank roads” system, Fayetteville became a center of government and commerce. Despite Fayetteville’s past challenges, including the Great Fire of 1831, and the destruction from the Civil War, the city is proud of its strength and determination to always rise after falling.

Fun Fact

Fayetteville was the first place to be named after Marquis de Lafayette, and was the only one to be visited by the man himself.
