The North Carolina Railroad is largely responsible for the founding of Cary in the mid-1850s. Farmer Allison Francis "Frank" Page and his wife Kate bought 300 acres. They began developing the town and named it Cary, after Samuel Fenton Cary. The local post office was established in 1856 and Page was the postmaster. He also was the town's first mayor.
The Umstead Hotel and Spa was named among the 2015 Best Hotels in the USA, by U.S. News & World Report in January 2015.
The Koka Booth Amphitheatre is an outdoor concert venues that hosts concerts and events.
Spring Daze Arts and Crafts Festival takes place every April.
